CASSOULET

Looks like the first big cooking competition of 2010 is going to be the 2nd Annual Greenmarket Cassoulet Cook-Off at Jimmy’s No. 43 on Saturday, January 16th. Traditionally made of pork, beans, and duck confit, the mighty French melange of cassoulet is also one of those classic dishes open to endless interpretations, so it’s a great springboard for creative cooking. Judging from this post, the competition already looks fierce (the seafood cassoulet with sardine stock and poached salt cod sounds brilliant). All entries must include some Greenmarket ingredients, and all proceeds from ticket sales go to the NYC Greenmarket. Go here for all the details.

SMALLBRAND

Got a great home-made edible that’s ready for the big time? The Rooster Design Group has announced a contest to find the next top craft food – and it could be yours. Rooster is the branding firm behind ricotta maker Salvatore BKLYN and granola company Early Bird Foods, and they’re out to find a follow-up product with their Next Big Small Food Brand competition. They’ve assembled a top-shelf panel of judges to help them, including Eric Demby of Brooklyn Flea, Carla Lalli-Music of Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food Magazine, and Karen Karp of food consultants Karp Resources. This is a fantastic opportunity for craft food makers toiling away in obscurity: the Grand Prize gets you the full design, branding, and marketing treatment from Rooster to help you launch your product. Entries are due by November 30, 2009, and the judging will take place on January 12th at iCi restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. With over a month to go before the deadline, there’s plenty of time to fine tune your product – so get cracking, people! Go here for all the contest details.

EGGPLANT

If you’ve got a recipe you think deserves space in a cookbook, here’s your chance to put it to the test. Food writers Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs have launched a new website called Food52.com, which they’re using as a platform to find reader-sourced recipes for their upcoming cookbook. Every week for a year (hence the Food52 moniker) they’ll announce the subject of their recipe contest and readers will enter their best recipes for consideration. Contest results will be announced on a weekly basis, and after a year the winning recipes will be published in a cookbook by HarperStudio. Another reason to enter: all finalists get some free gear from OXO Good Grips.

So for all the culinary competitors waiting impatiently for the next Takedown, Smackdown or Cook-Off, here’s a chance to get busy on a weekly basis.
